What are action steps and how do I use them?
Guidance on what to do, for many kinds of alerts
For many kinds of alerts, PHapp® includes guidance on what to do, drawn from official public sources. Not every alert has it: for some alert types the right action depends on the specific alert, so always follow the issuing agency’s instructions.
What Are Action Steps?
Action steps are specific, practical instructions that tell you:
- What the alert means for you and your family
- What immediate actions you should take
- How to prepare for the situation
- Where to find additional resources and help
- When to expect updates or changes
Types of Action Steps
Depending on the alert type, action steps might include:
- Weather: Seek shelter, avoid travel, secure outdoor items, prepare emergency supplies
- Health: Get vaccinated, avoid contaminated areas, seek medical attention, practice hygiene measures
- Environmental: Stay indoors, close windows, use air filtration, avoid affected water sources
- Safety: Evacuate, shelter in place, avoid specific areas, follow official instructions
Following Action Steps
When you receive an alert:
- Read the full alert details
- Review the action steps section
- Follow recommended actions in priority order
- Share critical information with family members if needed
- Monitor for updates as the situation evolves
Why Action Steps Matter
Action steps transform alerts from passive information into active protection:
- Reduce confusion during emergencies
- Help you make quick, informed decisions
- Provide expert guidance when seconds count
- Ensure you know exactly what to do
